What is Manual and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (CAMPT)?

CAMPT-Certified physiotherapists are Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Manual and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (FCAMPT) that have advanced training and clinical abilities in manual and musculoskeletal physiotherapy. FCAMPT is a trademarked and protected title that only CAMPT-Certified physiotherapists can use.

Are all physiotherapists in Canada CAMPT-certified?

No, only some physiotherapists in Canada are CAMPT-Certified physiotherapists.  CAMPT-Certified physiotherapists are those who earn their FCAMPT designation by completing an internationally accredited physiotherapy education program beyond the core university education required to become a physiotherapist in Canada.

FCAMPT physiotherapists undergo extensive training following graduation from their entry-level physiotherapy programs in the area of orthopaedics and hands-on therapy. This research-based training helps our patients get better, recover faster and stay healthier to return to pain-free living.

Orthopaedic Manual Physiotherapy involves a complex understanding of multiple systems; how these systems work independently and collectively. The precision required to identify and correct the problem within a system is improved with the application of highly skilled hands-on assessment and treatment, which FCAMPT physiotherapists can provide as a result of their advance training.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

If you have an injury, have had an accident, or experience chronic (long-lasting) pain which limits your quality of life, it’s a good idea to seek out a physiotherapist. Physiotherapy can also be recommended after orthopaedic surgery where loss of function may have occurred.

Your session will be focused on you and your specific goals:

  1. An assessment will start with asking you questions to understand your medical history and pain experience, as well as your lifestyle.
  2. We will assess how you move to help understand the causes of your pain and establish a clinical diagnosis.
  3. Your goals are our goals; we work together creating a plan to get you back to the activities you love. This can include in-clinic treatment as well as independent exercises.

The treatment technique(s) will depend on your injury, pain and mobility but can include:

  • Functional testing: to see your range of movement, strength, and ability to perform functional tasks (eg. bending, walking, lifting, etc.)
  • Manual movement or manipulation: moving parts of the body to relax muscles, improve range of movement, improve circulation
